Dauphin's Terron Stykalo was in Winnipeg this past weekend for a U21 Junior Canola Growers Provincial Championships Qualifier, and after a successful weekend, Stykalo and his rink locked up a spot in the Provincial Championships that start up later this month in Altona.
"It's a great accomplishment," said Stykalo. "It's what you work for all season. You need to play hard every game to get the spot, and when you get the spot, it's definitely a great feeling."
Stykalo curls with team Brett Walter, who is based out of Winnipeg.
The 19-year-old Dauphin native and his team kicked off the qualifier with a 7-1 win over Team Igonia. They then followed that up with a 5-4 win over Jack Hykaway which earned the foursome a spot in the Provincials.
"You practice for this all year," said Stykalo. "This was the biggest event besides Provincials that you play in all year. You're always working toward it, practicing, being together as a team, and it finally paid off for us."
The Provincials will feature 16 of the best teams from around the Province, including last year's winner, JT Ryan.
"I'm hoping the guys can come out and play well," said Stykalo. "I think we do have a good chance, and if we play well, we should do pretty well."
The U21 Canola Growers Provincial Championships will be in Altona from December 26-31, with the winner advancing to the National Championships in 2018.
