With the MJHL season more then half over, teams all around the league are not only battling to finish atop the standings but just get into the playoffs as races at the bottom are just as hot as the top.
"It's been a really great year," said Kim Davis, Commissioner of the MJHL. "If you look at the standings, we have some very interesting dynamic and competition. We've seen the competition since the start of the year, but it's shaping up to be a very exciting back half of the season with races at the top, middle and at the bottom."
This season is one of the most competitive that the MJHL has seen in recent years. At the top, the Steinbach Pistons lead the league with 49 points, while Winkler and OCN sit just behind at 44 points. Behind OCN and Winkler is four teams within 10 points
"It certainly is the most competitive season we've had," said Davis. "We have very competitive seasons every year, but this is even more so. It's really hard to say who the front-runner is. Yes, there is a little gap between the top and the bottom, but it's really not that large of a gap. It's going to be very interesting heading into the playoffs."
With the season halfway done, just like every year, all 11 teams are in Winnipeg for the MJHL Showcase, as not only do teams look to lock up points, but players will look to impress the scouts in attendance.
"This is the highlight of our season," said Davis. "We have scouts from NCAA, CIS, NHL, and WHL here. There have been some great matchups here, and more is to come today, so it's great."
If you are wondering why you should head to an MJHL game, and in Dauphin, a Dauphin Kings game, Davis has a few reasons why.
"The quality and the calibre of play in our league is really good," said Davis. "It's a much different game then it used to be. You still have the hard hits, and some fights, but there is a lot more speed now. It's just a really good brand of hockey, and definitely is a great night out."
The MJHL Showcase will wrap up today in Winnipeg.
