It was a golden Saturday for Gilbert Plains Riese Gaber as he and team Canada West won the World Jr.A Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
"It was just an unreal feeling," said Gaber. "Obviously getting to put that jersey on and win gold, especially with it being against the US in the final, there is no better feeling."
It was the second time Canada West hooked up with the US in the tournament, with the first game being a win by the US in the round-robin.
"We just buried our chances," said Gaber. "I think in the round-robin, we outplayed them and deserved better, but in the final, we just capitalized on our chances and that was the difference."
Last year in his first World Jr.A Challenge with team West, Gaber had one point.
"I was definitely more comfortable out there with my play," said Gaber. "Having the experience I gained from last year was huge for me."
After returning back home, Gaber reflects on his favourite moment from the tournament, besides winning gold.
"I think in the quarterfinal when we were down with six minutes left and we tied it," said Gaber. "Then we won it in overtime. It was our first win of the tournament, and obviously being it in overtime, it was pretty special."
Now Gaber is set to join the Steinbach Pistons who are currently in the top spot in the MJHL.
"I'm excited to get started," said Gaber. "And meeting all the guys, and hopefully we can win an MJHL Championship."
Gaber will make his debut as a Piston this Thursday, or on December 30.
