Swan River's Brust Wins Spengler Cup and Continues to Chase Olympic Dream

It's been quite the season and career for Swan River's Barry Brust, and perhaps one of the biggest seasons in his career to date.

"I'm overseas playing in Fribourg, and it's been a great place to play," said Brust. "It's been a little bit of an up and down season so far, but hopefully we can string together some wins here in the New Year and get it going."

One reason this is an extra important season for Brust is that the 34-year-old is looking to earn his spot on the Canadian men's national Hockey Team that will represent Canada at the upcoming Winter Olympics.

"That decision isn't up to me, but obviously I would love the chance and opportunity," said Brust. "I know everyone would like to see the NHL there, but they're not, so if we get the chance, we will definitely jump at it and make the most of it. It's definitely something we're working our tail off for."

The Swan River native has played 692 professional games, in six different leagues, which includes 11 games in the NHL when he suited up for the Los Angeles Kings in the 2006-2007 season.

"It's been pretty amazing," said Brust. "I've been very fortunate. I've played in a lot of great cities, and seen a lot of things many people haven't. I just feel very lucky to have played as long as I have and in the cities I have."

Brust has some advice for anyone who is looking to sketch their own way to the big leagues.

"Just have fun first and foremost," said Brust. "If you love the game, just keep pursuing it. Even if you have some setbacks, just keep going, and you never know what could happen."

Brust will now return to his club team, Fribourg-Gotteron HC and he hopes his name will be chosen when Canada announces their Olympic roster later this month.
