It was a good weekend for Dauphin's Lisa Hale-Menard and Ray Baker as they were in Charlotte, North Carolina playing in the Southern States Mixed Doubles tournament, where they finished in third.
The Dauphin duo kicked off their tournament firing on all cylinders, winning their first four games by a combined score of 40-14.
"Some of the teams we beat probably weren't as strong as us," said Baker. "With that being said, we got the ice dialed in right away, and we understood the conditions and we were making the shots."
Hale-Menard and Baker then hit a speed bump in the semifinals, where they dropped their first game of the tournament, 8-5. In the game, the team's were tied at five heading into the eighth end, but Hale-Menard and Baker's opponents scored three for the win.
"It's hard to say that we weren't disappointed," said Baker. "We were playing fairly well, but some things happened that weren't in our favour. We had chances, but for whatever reason, we just couldn't find a way to capitalize and score points."
Despite their semifinal loss, Hale-Menard and Baker bounced back to win the bronze medal match to finish third.
"I think we're very pleased with the result over the weekend," said Baker. Third place is never bad, but I think we played well as a team. Mixed Doubles is tough because you only have two people out there, but I think Lisa and myself communicated very well. We seemed to always have the right attitude, and mentality out there, so yeah, I was pleased."
Hale-Menard and Baker will now have a little time off before deciding where they will curl next in Mixed Doubles action.
